Hailing from Gent Belgium, dj and producer Franco Cangelli made his debut with the successful 2005 release Spectre on Belgian imprint Toys For Boys, after which he also signed with Sushitech releasing his Spin of Thought ep. Teaming up with fellow dj Akî, he then founded Aesthetik Records, based in Gent on which he released his third ep Mondo Guasto in 2006. Dj-ing up and down the country on small and big events such as Kozzmozz or 10 Days Off, and abroad such as London, France and the prestigious Moog club in Barcelona, hes known to be a versatile dj playing from pure minimal sets to detroitish techno or house and anything in between. A healthy mix of oldskool straightforwardness and technoid edgy sounds, having Detroit and Chicago as the main source of inspiration. This doesnt come as a surprise. Being a child of the 80s, he had his share of the breakdance craze in his childhood, backspinnin’, body poppin’, to the electro boogie of Grandmaster Flash, Africa Bambaataa, Jonzun Crew… By the end of the 80’s, Belgium came under the New Beat spell, which opened up an entirely new world, directly followed by the first insidious Chicago acid tunes. Franco has always been influenced by the more atmospheric, moody or darker tunes. So when Detroit techno arrived at the scene, his mind completely absorbed the deeper techno vibes from artists like Carl Craig, Juan Atkins… But it didn’t stop there. AFX, Autechre and other seminal artists who pushed the envelope even more, irrevocably shaped his mind to the more experimental side of electronic music, coming from labels like Warp, Skam, Rephlex… His productions bring all of these influences together, resulting in a hybrid kind of techno or house cross-fertilizing Detroit and Chicago with edgy sounds, to satisfy his incessant need for further musical exploration.
